China's economic policy future: state capitalism or strengthened market economy?
The DIW Berlin and the OECD Berlin Centre cordially invite you to the Berlin Lunchtime Meeting.
In China the strengthening of market mechanisms hoped for by western businesses is making only slow progress. Instead the state and the Communist Party are expanding their influence in the economy. This has consequences for China's economic policy. In the past decades this has led to growing overcapacities and indebtedness. Now China is aiming at global technological leadership. Is this approach a threat to the liberal order of the global economy?
Dr. Max J. Zenglein, Senior Economist at MERICS, is working on sector-specific and macro-economic aspects of economic development in China, German-Chinese economic relations as well as the labour market and employment in China. Before joining MERICS Dr. Zenglein worked as an analyst at the German Chamber of Commerce (AHK) Greater China in Shenzhen, and later in Beijing. He finalised his university studies at the University of New York at Buffalo, the University of Economics and Law in Berlin, the University of Hong Kong and the University of Kassel with a doctorate in political economy focusing on China.
Margit Molnar, Ph.D., is Senior Economist at the OECD’s Economics Department. She heads the China Desk of the Country Studies division in the Economics Department.
Prof. Marcel Fratzscher, Ph.D., is President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), Professor of Macroeconomics and Finance at the Humboldt University Berlin, and Member of the Advisory Council of the Federal Ministry of Economics.
